GCW has issued an apology after a talent at Sunday’s Aura event directed a homophobic slur at fans.
Chris Hamrick lands in trouble
Chris Hamrick, who is a 39-year veteran wrestler is popular for his short run with ECW in the company’s last days. His work as an enhancement talent in WCW and WWF, as well as one match in Wrestling Society X are noteworthy. He formed the Southern Comfort tag team with the late Tracy Smothers on the independent scene, primarily in the mid-to-late 2000s.
Appearing in a scramble match at Aura, Chris Hamrick used a homophobic slur toward fans at the show. GCW responded by issuing an apology, as well as donating Hamrick’s pay for the show to Youth Pride Rhode Island, an advocacy group for LGBTQ youth. GCW also matched Hamrick’s pay with their own donation, giving a total of $500 to the group.
GCW tweeted:
During tonite’s event, Chris Hamrick used language in an unscripted promo that was inconsistent with our values & offensive to many in our audience. We apologize to those affected. We are donating Chris’s pay, and matching it with an equal donation of our own to Youth Pride RI.
Hamrick issued an apology of his own via Twitter. He tweeted:
I want to apologize to everyone for the language I used at the GCW show tonite. For years I used this language in character and it became a habit. Regardless, there is no excuse because I know these words are offensive and I should know better. Sorry to anyone I offended #GCWAura
