According to The Hill, former House Speaker Paul Ryan, a Republican from Wisconsin, has made a bold statement regarding the potential electability of former President Donald Trump in the 2024 GOP primary election. Ryan believes that if the party were to nominate anyone other than Trump, they would have a strong chance of defeating President Joe Biden. He emphasized that Trump had significant “baggage” even before last week’s indictment, which he believes will further diminish his electability.

During an appearance on CBS This Morning, Ryan stressed the importance of a candidate’s core support in a primary. While acknowledging Trump’s dedicated base, Ryan argued that the indictment and any future developments surrounding it would make it easier to convince Trump’s supporters that he is not electable. Furthermore, Ryan expressed concerns that Trump’s controversial presence could negatively impact the party’s chances of winning the Senate and House seats.

He’s got a great core of support, and in a primary that’s what you build off of. So it does matter,” Ryan said. “But I think the electability argument is going to become more salient with this event and whatever happens in the future…it’s going to make it easier to make the argument to his supporters he’s not electable.”

“He’s going to cost us the Senate again, he’s going to cost us House seats, and we want to win

Trump is scheduled to be arraigned in Miami on Tuesday, facing over 30 counts related to the mishandling of classified documents after his departure from the White House in 2021. The federal prosecutors’ allegations assert that Trump endangered national security and violated the Espionage Act. Trump has consistently dismissed these accusations as politically motivated, asserting that President Biden is using the Justice Department as a weapon against him to prevent him from returning to the White House.

The relationship between Trump and Ryan has been marked by frequent clashes. The former president has frequently criticized Ryan, particularly due to his position on the board of Fox Corp., the parent company of Fox News. Trump’s dissatisfaction with the network has grown since his electoral defeat in 2020.

Ryan’s assessment of Trump’s electability highlights the division within the Republican Party regarding the former president’s future role. As the GOP looks toward the 2024 presidential race, debates over candidates and strategies are likely to intensify, with Trump’s indictment further shaping the discourse surrounding his potential political prospects.
