Lin Wood, a prominent figure known for advocating the false conspiracy theory of Joe Biden cheating to win a stolen 2020 presidential election and worked with Donald Trump, has decided to retire from the practice of law rather than face potential disbarment in the state of Georgia.
Wood formally requested to transfer to Retired Status in a letter addressed to the general counsel and executive director of the state bar of Georgia. He acknowledged that this request would permanently and irrevocably prevent him from practicing law in Georgia or any other jurisdiction. Furthermore, Wood acknowledged that he would be prohibited from seeking readmission to the legal profession.
Throughout his career, Wood gained recognition for representing high-profile clients such as Richard Jewell and the Ramsey family. However, it was his representation of Nicholas Sandmann in defamation suits against media outlets that elevated his status among right-wing circles. The media had falsely reported that Sandmann had taunted a Native American man during a school trip to Washington, D.C.
In a letter addressed to the general counsel and executive director of the state bar of Georgia, Wood requested that he “be permitted to transfer to Retired Status effective immediately.” He continued:
I understand that this request is unqualified, irrevocable and permanent. I further understand and acknowledge that if granted Retired Status I am prohibited from practicing law in this State and in any other state or jurisdiction and that I may not apply for readmission.
Wood’s fame grew as he fully embraced the belief that former President Donald Trump had won the 2020 election, claiming that Trump received 70% of the vote. He went on to accuse various individuals, including Republican Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, of accepting Chinese money to manipulate the election in favor of Joe Biden. At a rally, Wood directly accused Kemp of being a criminal and alleged financial ties with Dominion and China.
In December 2020, Wood made alarming statements, saying, “I’m not an alarmist, and I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but I know what’s about to happen. It’s going to look like a civil war, but it’s going to be a revolutionary war.” These remarks added to the controversy surrounding Wood’s involvement in promoting baseless claims about the election.
Wood’s troubles extended beyond his legal career. He faced disbarment proceedings for suggesting that former Vice President Mike Pence should be executed and was also accused of assaulting colleagues. These incidents further strained his professional reputation and led to his decision to retire from the legal field.
