According to Mediate, former President Donald Trump, who chose to skip the GOP presidential debate on Wednesday night and instead joined Tucker Carlson for an interview, claimed that his interview garnered massive viewership, surpassing television programming. The campaign PAC released a statement stating that the interview received over 124,400 reposts and 439,500 likes, which they touted as overshadowing television programming.
However, it’s important to note that the claim of “100 million views on X” does not necessarily equate to 100 million people watching the interview. On platforms like Twitter (referred to as X), a view is counted each time someone scrolls past a tweet. This means that even if the same person views the tweet multiple times, each instance counts as a view. Additionally, viewing a tweet does not indicate that the person actually watched the interview.
Twitter’s own explanation of views states that anyone logged into Twitter who views a tweet is counted as a view, regardless of whether they follow the author or where they see the tweet. Multiple views may be counted if a person views a tweet more than once. This information also raises questions about the authenticity of the viewers, as many accounts on Twitter could be fake or automated bots.
For instance, a report from Mashable pointed out that a significant percentage of Elon Musk’s Twitter followers were likely fake accounts or bots. A large number of these accounts had no followers, no tweets posted, and followed very few users.
