According to Mediate, former President Donald Trump launched a scathing critique against Department of Justice Special Counsel Jack Smith after Smith made a request for a gag order against Trump on Friday. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump vented his frustration, accusing Smith of being a “Biden Prosecutor” and labeling him as “deranged.”
In his Truth Social post, Trump stated: “Biden Prosecutor, Deranged Jack Smith, has asked the Court to limit 45th President, and leading Republican Nominee (by more than 50 points, & beating Dems!) DONALD J. TRUMP’S, PUBLIC STATEMENTS.”
Trump expressed his dismay at the situation, highlighting his campaign for the presidency against what he deemed an “incompetent person” who had allegedly manipulated the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the FBI to target him as a political opponent. Trump questioned why he was being denied the ability to comment on these matters, especially when, in his view, there had been leaks, falsehoods, and legal actions taken against him. He further characterized Jack Smith as “DERANGED” and President Joe Biden as “INCOMPETENT.”
Not stopping at his social media criticism, Trump also seized an opportunity to attack Smith during a speech he delivered at the Washington, D.C. Pray Vote Stand Summit a few hours later. Trump questioned the familiarity of the audience with Jack Smith and suggested that the name “Jack Smith” sounded benign.
I wonder what his name used to be. Jack Smith, sounds so nice, doesn’t it? He’s a deranged individual and he wants to take away my First Amendment rights. They went to court to get an order that I can’t speak. Now you gotta understand, I’m the leading candidate by fifty points and I’m beating Biden by a lot, and they wanna see if they can silence me so the media, the fake news will ask me a question, “I’m sorry, I won’t be able to answer that.” How do you think we do in that election? So we’re gonna have a little bit of a fun with that, I think, because that’s a tough one. Can you imagine?
However, he quickly pivoted to paint Smith as a “deranged individual” who was attempting to curtail his First Amendment rights. Trump asserted that he was the leading candidate by a significant margin and accused Smith and his legal actions of trying to silence him. He speculated about how such a scenario would play out if the media were to ask him questions he couldn’t answer due to a gag order, hinting at potential political consequences.
Trump’s fiery remarks underscore the ongoing tension between him and certain legal authorities, with both sides engaging in a battle over issues related to free speech and legal proceedings.
