According to Semafor, former high-ranking national security advisors from the Trump administration are calling on the U.S. government to revoke security clearances granted to American officials who may pose a threat to national security due to their ties or sympathy towards the Iranian government. This demand was outlined in a statement shared with Semafor, and it was endorsed by notable figures such as former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien, Pentagon chief Christopher Miller, and Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliff.
The security clearance revocation of Robert Malley, the Biden administration’s special envoy to Iran, took place in April, and he is currently under FBI investigation for the alleged mishandling of classified information, according to U.S. officials. Reports from Semafor indicated that since 2014, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has been supporting a network of foreign academics to promote Tehran’s stances on national security, and some of these associates were connected to Malley. Notably, Ariane Tabatabai, one of the individuals involved in this network, presently holds a high-level security clearance at the Pentagon.
Expressing deep concern over recent revelations about Iranian influence operations targeting American citizens, particularly those employed within the U.S. government, the former senior officials emphasized the immediate and tangible threat posed by Iran and its various covert operations, including its efforts to influence the national security landscape of the United States.
