According to Mediaite, former Vice President Mike Pence made a surprising announcement during the Republican Jewish Coalition Conference on Saturday, revealing his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential election and suspend his campaign for the Republican nomination. Pence expressed that he could not, in good conscience, continue his campaign as it had become evident to him that his chances of securing the nomination were slim.
Referencing a biblical verse, Pence conveyed that after extensive contemplation and prayer, he had arrived at the decision to step back from the race. His statement emphasized the recognition that the timing was not aligned with his political aspirations, leading to the difficult choice to suspend his presidential campaign effective immediately.
While Pence’s departure from the race surprised some political observers and the media, it was acknowledged that his campaign had faced ongoing challenges, including questions about his ability to garner sufficient support to qualify for the third debate stage. Despite his campaign’s relatively modest polling numbers, Pence had managed to generate significant fundraising, leaving room for speculation regarding the potential redirection of his supporters and donors to the remaining contenders vying for the Republican nomination.
“The Bible tells us that there’s a time for every purpose under heaven,” said Pence. “Traveling across the country over the past six months, I came here to say, it’s become clear to me: This is not my time.”
“So after much prayer and deliberation, I have decided to suspend my campaign for president effective today,” said Pence.
With Pence’s exit from the race, attention now turns to other prominent figures within the Republican party, including potential contenders such as former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, current Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, as well as former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson. The shifting landscape following Pence’s withdrawal is expected to bring further focus to the strategies and platforms of the remaining Republican candidates in the race for the 2024 presidential nomination.
