New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) recently addressed the reporters outside a Manhattan courtroom on Monday after former President Donald Trump testified in the civil fraud case she brought to trial via Media Ite.
James tore into Trump, saying:
“He rambled, he hurled insults. But we expected that at the end of the day, the documentary evidence demonstrated that, in fact, he falsely inflated his assets to basically enrich himself and his family.”
“He continued to persistently engage in fraud. The numbers don’t lie, and Mr. Trump obviously can engage in all of these distractions and that is what, exactly what he did, what he committed on the stand today, engaged in, engaging in distractions and engaging in name-calling,” James continued, referring to Trump’s regular attacks on her and the court.
“But I will not be bullied. I will not be harassed. This case will go on. We look forward to hearing the testimony of Ivanka Trump on Wednesday. And then we plan on closing our case and then there’ll be some motions on Thursday and then the defense will present their case and chief. Justice will prevail. And it’s important that all of you understand that we have already been victorious in our motion for summary judgment. And now we look forward to disgorgement and to the remaining counts in our action against Donald Trump and his repeated and consistent fraud against the citizens of the great state of New York,” James concluded.
James’ comments reflected the predictions she made earlier in the day, when she spoke to reporters ahead of Trump taking the stand and said she expected Trump would attack her and the justice system.
“Before he takes the stand, I am certain that he will engage in name-calling and taunts and race-baiting and call this a witch hunt,” James said. “But at the end of the day, the only thing that matters are the facts and the numbers. And numbers, my friends, don’t lie.”
Trump is on trial in New York City to determine the penalties related to James’s civil suit against Trump, his company, and his adult sons. James alleges that Trump committed fraud by falsely inflating his assets for well over a decade.
Judge Arthur Engoron has already found Trump liable for the fraud in a summary ruling and the trial is ongoing to determine penalties.
James is seeking a $250 million fine and to bar Trump and his sons from doing business in the state of New York, which would effectively dissolve his company and force the sale of several of his highly indebted assets.
