House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) recently claimed Wednesday that the impeachment investigation into Joe Biden is not “meritless” like the probes into former President Donald Trump, because investigators have found enough “alarming facts” that could lead to charges against the current president via Mediaite.
Johnson has appeared alongside Reps. James Comer (R-KY), Jim Jordan (R-OH), and Jason Smith (R-MO), and claimed the team had found four major “pieces of evidence” against the Biden family. The allegations included:
- Biden received more than $15 million from foreign companies and foreign nationals.
- President Biden has lied “at least 16 times” about his involvement in his family’s business schemes.
- There are at least 22 examples of Joe Biden speaking to, or meeting with, Hunter Biden’s foreign business associates.
- Investigators have two checks made out to Joe Biden: $40,000 from China and $200,000 from a “now-bankrupt health care company that his brother James Biden apparently swindled.”
“These facts are alarming. They’re alarming to the American people, they’re alarming to us. And, so, while we take no pleasure in the proceedings here, we have a responsibility to do it,” Johnson said. “We owe it to the American people to pursue this process, but to do it methodically and transparently.” Johnson continued:
Many of you know, I’m a lawyer, I’m a constitutional law attorney. I served on President Trump’s defense team twice. And we lamented openly, we decried how the Democrats politicized that process. They were brazenly political in how they brought those meritless impeachment charges against the president. This, what you are seeing here, is exactly the opposite.
We are the rule of law team; the Republican Party stands for the rule of law, and the people in charge of this are doing this thoroughly, carefully, methodically. They’re investigating and gathering all the facts. And to do this appropriately, to do it in a manner that upholds our constitutional responsibility, requires time.
The president’s son, Hunter Biden, agreed this week to testify publicly before Congress on the allegations against his father. However, Republicans continue to demand a closed-door session.
