Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold (D) recently stated that the Colorado Supreme Court was “right” to kick former President Donald Trump off the state’s ballot. However, he said that he would appear on it unless the U.S. Supreme Court “quickly” upholds the decision in a statement released on Thursday morning via Mediaite.
“The Colorado Republican Party has appealed the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision in Anderson v. Griswold to the U.S. Supreme Court. With the appeal filed, Donald Trump will be included as a candidate on Colorado’s 2024 Presidential Primary Ballot when certification occurs on January 5, 2024, unless the U.S. Supreme Court declines to take the case or otherwise affirms the Colorado Supreme Court ruling,” explained Griswold’s office.
“Donald Trump engaged in insurrection and was disqualified under the Constitution from the Colorado Ballot,” wrote Griswold on X (formerly Twitter) Thursday morning. “The Colorado Supreme Court got it right. This decision is now being appealed. I urge the U.S. Supreme Court to act quickly given the upcoming presidential primary election.”
The state court found earlier this month that Trump was ineligible for the presidency under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which states that:
“No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”
Trump has slammed the effort to take him off the ballot as a “pathetic gambit to rig the Election” against him.
