Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) recently broke with former President Donald Trump whose opposition recently assisted tank a bipartisan border deal — and called for an urgent solution to what he called a “national security nightmare.”
In an interview on CBS’ Face the Nation Sunday, the South Carolina senator clarified that he is not in favor of punting on the issue.
“[Former] President Trump says ‘let’s wait on the border,’” Graham said via Mediaite. “With all due respect, we cannot wait. It’s a national security nightmare. A 2,000 percetn increase in people on the terrorist watch list coming across the border. In two years, 5 billion people could be killed by the amount of fentanyl coming across our southern border. The largest loss of life of young people in America is fentanyl poisoning coming across the southern border. So I don’t want to wait, I want to act now on the border.”
Trump has been vehement in his opposition to any type of bipartisan agreement on the border unless it is a “perfect” deal. Graham, on Sunday, voiced his disagreement — and said he believes Democrats and Republicans can find common ground inside of a month.
“I see a way to secure our border in a more simple fashion,” Graham said, adding that he thinks it can happen “can happen in the next 30 days.”
