Newly disclosed documents reveal that in 2016, Hunter Biden utilized his father’s prominent political position to shield himself from potential legal repercussions in a federal securities investigation. The case centered around a tribal bond scheme that drew the attention of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, implicating Hunter’s business dealings.
The investigation included subpoenas for documents from entities associated with Hunter Biden, such as his business partner Devon Archer and their joint venture, Rosemont Seneca Bohai. According to the Committee on Oversight, RSB was directly involved in the scheme, serving as a conduit for substantial sums from foreign entities and individuals, some of whom had interactions with then-Vice President Joe Biden before and after depositing significant funds into RSB accounts, ultimately benefiting Hunter Biden.
In March 2016, the SEC intensified its scrutiny by subpoenaing Hunter Biden personally for a wide array of documents related to RSB. His legal team responded in April 2016, urging the SEC to maintain strict confidentiality due to the sensitive nature of the investigation. They argued that public exposure of the probe would not only harm Hunter but also unfairly impact his father, then Vice President of the United States.
Their letter explicitly stated, “The confidential nature of this investigation is very important to our client and it would be unfair, not just to our client, but also to his father, the Vice President of the United States, if his involvement in an SEC investigation and parallel criminal probe were to become the subject of any media attention.”
Despite the seriousness of the allegations and ongoing investigations, Hunter Biden was not charged by the SEC. In contrast, in May 2016, the SEC announced charges against seven other individuals connected to the case, with no mention of Hunter.
Currently, as part of an impeachment inquiry into President Biden, Republican lawmakers James Comer and Jim Jordan are pressing the SEC for further details regarding its handling of the investigation, particularly any influence Hunter Biden’s familial ties may have had on the proceedings.
The scrutiny surrounding Hunter Biden has intensified in recent times. Earlier this month, Republican chairmen referred Hunter to the Justice Department for allegedly making false statements about his role at RSB during a deposition, further entangling his father in accusations of misconduct. Moreover, a jury recently found Hunter guilty on three felony counts related to purchasing firearms while actively using drugs, potentially leading to legal repercussions just months before the upcoming election.
