Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) has recently published an op-ed expressing concerns about President Joe Biden’s readiness for a second term. In the piece, Moulton reflects on his close relationship with Biden, who he describes as a “mentor and friend.” He recounts Biden’s support during his 2014 primary race and their subsequent interactions, both in person and by phone.
However, Moulton notes a significant change: “More recently, I saw him in a small group at Normandy for the 80th anniversary of D-Day. For the first time, he didn’t seem to recognize me.” He suggests that this moment was indicative of broader issues he observed, particularly following a recent debate that he found troubling.
Moulton praises Biden’s accomplishments and leadership but argues that the president might struggle to win against Donald Trump in the November election. He cites Biden’s age and recent incidents as factors contributing to his concerns, including an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania that has heightened the stakes.
In his op-ed, Moulton frames the current situation as a “huge opportunity” for the Democratic Party, emphasizing the need for a fresh approach. He urges Biden to consider stepping aside to secure his legacy and enable the party to present a new candidate who resonates with the majority of Americans.
“This is bigger than one president or one party. It’s about America,” Moulton writes. “Let’s win this election, Mr. President, and in the process, ensure you have the legacy you deserve from a lifetime of service to our country.”
