Cole would go on to sign with rival promotion AEW after it was revealed that he was no longer interested in staying with WWE upon the completion of his contract. During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer remarked that it was Bruce Prichard who made those pitches to Cole.
Ideas pitched to Cole included turning him into a heel manager and pairing him with Keith Lee, something that was seen similar to the Lio Rush-Bobby Lashley partnership. The company was also not viewing Cole as a main-event player due to his size, instead, wanted to utilize on his mic skills.
