President Joe Biden announced a new $225 million aid package for Ukraine, which includes a Patriot missile system to enhance its air defenses amid ongoing Russian airstrikes. This announcement came during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who called the news “strong” but emphasized the need for U.S. permission to use long-range missiles against deeper targets inside Russia.
This second Patriot air defense system provided by the U.S. is part of a series of pledges made at the NATO summit to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities. The aid package also includes Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, and additional 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds, among other munitions.
Zelenskyy had previously requested more U.S.-made Patriot systems, arguing that they are essential to counter the approximately 3,000 bombs Russia launches into Ukraine each month. In a joint statement on Tuesday, the U.S., Germany, and Romania committed to providing Ukraine with additional Patriot batteries. The Netherlands and other countries will supply components for another battery, while Italy will contribute a SAMP-T air defense system.
Other allies, including Canada, Norway, Spain, and the United Kingdom, will provide various systems to help Ukraine expand its coverage. These systems include NASAMS, HAWKs, IRIS T-SLM, IRIS T-SLS, and Gepards. Additional nations have agreed to supply munitions for these systems.
The new U.S. Patriot system will be funded through presidential drawdown authority, enabling the military to quickly transfer the system from its stocks to Ukraine. Additionally, last week, the U.S. pledged $150 million in weapons from its stocks, including air defense interceptors, artillery, other firepower, and anti-tank weapons. The U.S. also committed $2.2 billion in Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative funds for long-term weapon systems, including Patriot missiles and NASAM air defense systems.
