GOP Congressmen ‘Panic’ About Trump Going To Jail

CNN’s Manu Raju posed a pressing question to Congressional Republicans: What would be their stance if former President Donald Trump were to be convicted? In a segment aired on CNN’s Inside Politics, Raju sought responses from four Republican members of Congress, with varying degrees of willingness to engage.

Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) displayed a degree of enthusiasm in his response, injecting a bit of humor into the situation by quipping, “Is his opponent still Joe Biden?” He affirmed his support for Trump, even in the scenario of a conviction.

However, Representative Dusty Johnson (R-SD) took a more measured approach, emphasizing the importance of considering the specifics surrounding a potential Trump conviction. Johnson underscored the significance of examining the charges and the nature of the conviction before making a decision on support.

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) opted for a more evasive response, attempting to evade the question by stating, “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.” This wishy-washy answer left the matter open-ended.

In contrast, Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) appeared more eager to respond, dismissing the possibility of Trump’s conviction as “totally trumped up charges.” Hawley’s quick dismissal suggested a strong allegiance to Trump and a rejection of the notion that the former president could face legitimate legal challenges.

The responses from these Republican lawmakers highlight the complex and divisive nature of the political landscape surrounding Trump. While some expressed a willingness to stand by him regardless of a conviction, others hinted at a more cautious and contingent approach, emphasizing the importance of examining the details of any legal proceedings. The varying reactions underscore the ongoing tension within the Republican Party regarding its relationship with the former president and the potential legal challenges he may face.
