President Biden met with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar on Friday, during which Varadkar expressed his belief in the urgent need for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.
Varadkar emphasized the importance of addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, advocating for swift action to deliver essential supplies and secure the release of hostages. Biden promptly agreed with Varadkar’s stance and expressed a mutual commitment to explore avenues for achieving a lasting peace through a two-state solution.
“You know, my – my view that we need to have a cease-fire as soon as possible to get food and medicine in, to get the hostages out,” Varadkar said.
Biden interjected, saying “And I agree.”
Both leaders acknowledged the mounting pressure to secure a cease-fire, underscoring the imperative of facilitating humanitarian aid and ensuring the safety of civilians in Gaza. Following Biden’s recent State of the Union address, where he highlighted concerns over the worsening situation in Gaza, he was overheard discussing the matter with Sen. Michael Bennet. Biden affirmed his intention to hold a crucial discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, signaling a heightened determination to address the crisis.
In response to escalating tensions, Biden announced initiatives to provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza, including air-dropping supplies and establishing temporary infrastructure for aid delivery. Meanwhile, prominent Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, have called for new elections in Israel and criticized Netanyahu’s handling of the conflict. Biden acknowledged Schumer’s concerns, indicating widespread American apprehension regarding the situation.
