During a discussion on MSNBC’s “Symone on Sunday,” April Ryan, an MSNBC contributor and The Grio’s Washington bureau chief, commented on Republican Chris Christie’s position as a potential alternative to Donald Trump in the GOP primary. Ryan acknowledged that Christie has positioned himself well, but also highlighted the challenges he may face, particularly in debates and dealing with Trump’s support and sympathy within the party.

The conversation addressed Trump’s strong lead in national primary polling, but host Symone Sanders emphasized the significance of winning delegates on a state-by-state basis. She mentioned Christie’s improved numbers in New Hampshire as an example, leading to Ryan’s response. Ryan noted that while Christie is positioning himself as an alternative to Trump, he will face the challenge of debating Trump directly, as Trump tends to speak highly of himself when discussing his competitors. Ryan also mentioned how many within the Republican Party view Trump as a martyr, as strategist Karl Rove had predicted to her last year.

Ryan alluded to the controversy surrounding Trump’s conduct and the perception of him as a martyr, although she did not go into detail. Sanders redirected the conversation, acknowledging the sensitivity of the topic on Father’s Day, and Ryan moved on to discuss the issues related to the recent controversies surrounding Trump and the perception of a witch hunt among sympathetic Republicans.

Sanders offered her own perspective, stating that she sees it as a matter of justice rather than a witch hunt.
