Ivanka Trump has recently made a significant move in the ongoing $250 million lawsuit brought against her family’s real estate company by New York Attorney General Letitia James. She has replaced the legal team that she previously shared with her brothers, Donald Jr. and Eric Trump, indicating that she plans to mount a different defense strategy than her siblings.
According to Forbes, Ivanka Trump has retained Bennet Moskowitz of Troutman Pepper as her sole attorney on the case. Moskowitz has previously represented the estate of convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. It is a significant shift in strategy from Ivanka’s previous representation by Clifford Robert and Michael Farina, who were hired by her brothers.
Additionally, Moskowitz is taking over for two Washington, DC-based lawyers, Reid Figel and Michael Kellogg, who were hired independently by Ivanka. The move suggests that Ivanka may be looking to distance herself from her brothers and pursue a different approach to the case.
The split in the legal team became apparent on March 6, when one of Ivanka’s former attorneys asked the judge to delay the trial. They argued that the complaint did not contain any allegations that Ivanka had created, reviewed, or certified any of her father’s financial statements. Instead, the complaint stated that other individuals were responsible for those tasks.
The civil lawsuit, filed by James last September, accuses the Trump family of fraudulently inflating the value of assets, including real estate and golf courses, to allegedly obtain favorable loans and tax benefits.
The lawsuit aims to obtain a $250 million repayment of financial benefits allegedly obtained fraudulently by the Trump Organization. It also seeks to remove all four Trumps from their roles at the family business and ban them from future leadership roles in the state.
With the trial scheduled to begin in October, it remains to be seen how Ivanka’s decision to retain Moskowitz will affect the outcome of the case. However, her move to distance herself from her brothers and pursue a different legal strategy suggests that she may be looking to protect her own interests in the case.
