According to Firstshowing, Universal Pictures is set to release an audacious and uproarious comedy titled “Strays,” which takes a subversive twist on the beloved concept of a talking dog movie. This raunchy, R-rated canine-centered film, directed by Josh Greenbaum (known for “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar”), is set to hit theaters on August 18th, 2023.
“Strays” follows Reggie, a naively optimistic Border Terrier voiced by Will Ferrell, who finds himself abandoned on the unforgiving city streets by his former owner, Doug, portrayed by Will Forte. Despite his loyal and positive disposition, Reggie’s painful realization that Doug was an unscrupulous and heartless individual sets the stage for a comedic and unconventional journey of revenge and redemption.
The film’s unique premise takes the typical heartwarming narrative of canine companionship and flips it on its head, infusing it with humor, irreverence, and explicit language. Reggie teams up with an eclectic group of fellow strays, including the wisecracking Boston Terrier Bug (voiced by Jamie Foxx), the intelligent Australian Shepherd Maggie (Isla Fisher), and the anxious Great Dane Hunter (Randall Park), who serves as an emotional support animal.
A series of behind-the-scenes featurettes released by Universal Pictures offer a glimpse into the making of “Strays” and showcase the comedic chemistry between the voice cast, which includes Ferrell, Foxx, Fisher, Park, and Forte. The actors’ camaraderie and witty banter create an atmosphere of unbridled fun and spontaneity, with the recording booth becoming a hub of creative energy.
The film’s narrative delves into themes of friendship, love, and revenge, while also delivering a barrage of laughs and surprises. “Strays” challenges traditional notions of dog movies by juxtaposing heartwarming moments with edgy humor, resulting in a cinematic experience that promises to be both entertaining and boundary-pushing.
