President Biden and Pope Francis shared a poignant moment on the final day of the G-7 summit in southern Italy. The two leaders warmly greeted each other with a handshake and a touching gesture of their foreheads touching before a working session at the Borgo Egnazia resort in Savelletri near Bari.
Earlier in the day, Pope Francis had a lighthearted gathering with over 100 comedians at the Vatican City as a precursor to his meeting with Biden at the G-7 summit. Among the comedians present were Whoopi Goldberg, Jimmy Fallon, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Chris Rock, Stephen Colbert, and Conan O’Brien.
Addressing the comedians, Pope Francis praised their ability to unite people through laughter, describing laughter as contagious and expressing his admiration for their skill in bridging diverse and sometimes conflicting viewpoints. He humorously noted that he had prayed for a good sense of humor for 40 years.
At the G-7 summit, leaders focused on crucial global issues including artificial intelligence, economic security, migration, financial aid for Ukraine, the conflict in Gaza, climate change, Iran, maritime security in the Red Sea, gender equality, and China’s industrial policies.
The summit aimed to address these pressing geopolitical and social challenges through comprehensive discussions and collaborative efforts among the world’s leading industrialized nations.
