Kevin McCarthy Allegedly Quitting Before Trump…

Multiple GOP lawmakers are anticipating that Kevin McCarthy, former House Speaker from California, may resign from his seat before the end of the year, according to reports from Axios. McCarthy has reportedly indicated his desire to “get the hell out” in private conversations with donors, potentially leaving the House GOP with a narrower majority. The former speaker has stated that he is taking time to decide whether to run again, emphasizing the need for a wholehearted commitment. Speculation over McCarthy’s departure heightened as he posted a photo on Instagram showing his district office being packed during the Thanksgiving recess.

Concerns have been raised among Republicans that if McCarthy resigns, California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom could keep the seat open until a special election. The GOP’s slim majority is already at risk with the potential expulsion of Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) in an upcoming vote.

The transition from leading the conference to becoming a rank-and-file member has been noted as awkward by GOP lawmakers. Tensions between McCarthy and his critics have persisted since his historic removal from the speaker position. Some rank-and-file members have expressed frustrations with McCarthy’s attempts to undermine candidates vying to succeed him as speaker, diminishing the sympathy he gained after his initial ouster.

While McCarthy’s allies praise his fundraising abilities and leadership skills, critics accuse him of bitterness and pettiness in remarks about those who contributed to his removal. The uncertainty surrounding McCarthy’s decision has led to a discussion of the potential impact on GOP leadership until a special election is held for his Republican stronghold seat.

The former speaker has until California’s December 8 filing deadline to make a decision about his political future. His departure, if it materializes, could signify a significant change in dynamics within the GOP.
