U.S. Senator Tim Scott, who previously campaigned against Donald Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, has now endorsed his former rival at a rally in New Hampshire, just four days before the crucial Republican nominating contest in the state. This move deals a setback to Trump’s top remaining primary competitor, Nikki Haley, who is trailing Trump by 14 points in New Hampshire, according to polling averages.
Speaking before a crowd of supporters in Concord, Scott listed reasons for endorsing Trump, emphasizing the need for another term for the former president to lower taxes and unite the country. Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate, becomes the latest conservative U.S. lawmaker to endorse Trump, who recently won Iowa’s caucus by a historic margin.
Trump briefly acknowledged Scott’s endorsement before criticizing Haley and Democratic President Joe Biden, whom he is likely to face in a general election rematch in November. Trump also intensified his criticism of New Hampshire’s Republican governor, Chris Sununu, who endorsed Haley in December.
In 2012, Haley appointed Scott to replace retiring U.S. Senator Jim DeMint, making him the first Black Republican in the Senate since 1979. Scott’s endorsement could be crucial in a contest where race has become a dominant theme.
Despite some previous criticism of Trump, including remarks on race in 2017, Scott has largely managed to avoid drawing the former president’s ire. Trump’s team and Scott’s team had been in contact for several weeks before the endorsement.
While Haley has been endorsed by the Republican governor of Vermont, Phil Scott, who is well-known in New Hampshire, Senator Tim Scott’s endorsement of Trump adds another layer of significance to the political dynamics leading up to the primary contest.
