Hunter Biden and his wife, Melissa Cohen, arrived at the federal courthouse in Wilmington, Delaware, on Tuesday ahead of the opening statements in his federal criminal gun trial.
A jury was selected on Monday for Hunter’s trial, and the opening statements commenced on Tuesday morning.
By late Monday afternoon, a jury of twelve men and women had been chosen to oversee the case, along with four alternates. Notably, nine of the twelve panelists are African-American, and all four alternates are women.
Hunter held his wife’s hand as they entered the court on Tuesday, followed by his legal team.
During the opening statements on the first day of the federal criminal gun trial, prosecutors presented a damning case against Hunter Biden.
“No one is above the law,” prosecutor Derek Hines asserted on Tuesday. “It doesn’t matter who you are or what your name is.”
In September, Hunter Biden was indicted on federal gun charges, facing three counts related to the possession of a firearm while using drugs. He pleaded not guilty to all charges in October.
Text messages revealed that Hunter Biden arranged a drug deal with someone named “Mookie” just one day after illegally purchasing the gun on October 12, 2018. Days later, he was found passed out in his car after a crack-smoking binge, during which his then-lover and deceased brother’s widow, Hallie Biden, allegedly discarded the firearm.
Prosecutors informed the court on Tuesday that Hunter Biden bought the firearm while frequently using crack cocaine, with a witness testifying to observing him smoking crack “every 15 minutes” during their romantic relationship.
