Former NBC senior executive Mike Sington faced backlash from Republicans and internet users after making a comment about Barron Trump, the youngest son of former President Donald Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump, who turned 18 on Wednesday.
In a now-deleted post on X (formerly Twitter), Sington shared a photo of Trump and Barron, declaring that Barron is now “fair game.” The comment sparked controversy as some interpreted it as suggesting Barron could be targeted for harm.
Sington clarified that by saying Barron is “fair game,” he meant that as an adult, Barron is subject to criticism from the press. However, he acknowledged the misinterpretation and removed the post, stating that he does not wish physical harm on anyone.
The comment drew criticism from various quarters, with some internet users condemning it as “creepy” and “sick.” Republicans and MAGA supporters also joined in the condemnation, expressing concern for Barron’s well-being and denouncing the perceived threat.
Among those who criticized Sington’s comment were Michael R. Caputo, a former assistant secretary of public affairs for the Department of Health and Human Services during the Trump administration, and Garrett Ventry, a former senior communications adviser to the Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans.
