Cody Rhodes and Steve Austin returned at WrestleMania 38. Cody was one of the highlights of AEW television as he immediately made an impact on the company. He even competed in the first-ever match on AEW Dynamite against Sammy Guevara, which he won. In addition, many long-time fans of All Elite Wrestling called Cody Rhodes’s match against his brother, Dustin at AEW’s inaugural pay-per-view event back in 2019 not only one of Cody’s best but one of the company’s best in its short infancy.

Since then, Rhodes has won the TNT Championship on three different occasions and has put over numerous stars such as MJF, Darby Allin, Sammy Guevara, and many others. Rhodes would also be a part of a beloved mixed tag team matchup that featured NBA icon, Shaquille O’Neal. Towards the end of his run in AEW, Cody Rhodes was also largely hated by fans as they simply wanted him to turn heel but he never did.

It was announced that Cody and his wife Brandi Rhodes had parted with the company after working there for over three years. This was seen as a shocking move as their departures came out of the left field and many fans expected to see them involved in more storylines as well.

He finally made his return to WWE during WrestleMania 38 where he defeated Seth Rollins. Cody Rhodes spoke to “‎The Ringer Wrestling Show”where he talked about how Vince McMahon helped him join WWE again.
“I can tell you one of the most special parts of it was that Bruce and the chairman himself, Vince flew down to meet me. Had that meeting not led to anything, had it just been a conversation about wrestling and sports entertainment would have been great closure on the last loop. Because I mean, I left here on the worst of terms. I talked about all the smack on Earth. But none of it mattered. It was just ‘Hey, you went out and did it.’ I remember saying, ‘I have to be me. It has to be the American Nightmare.’ To hear Vince say, ‘Well, it’s not broken. That’s what we’re buying’, again, just vindication. It felt good. You spent all this time trying to prove people wrong who doubted you and prove people right who were on board with you. But at that moment, it was just closure on the first loop and excitement for what’s next. And I mean, I’m going to talk about it on RAW and I’ll probably limit it, but it’s pretty clear what I came to do. Pretty clear. There’s unfinished business for my family, and there’s something we never got, and I want to be the one to get it.”
