CNN’s chief congressional correspondent, Manu Raju, interviewed Rep. Derrick Van Orden after the State of the Union address, during which Van Orden had audibly yelled “lies” while President Joe Biden spoke. Raju questioned Van Orden about his outburst and pressed him on whether it was appropriate to accuse the president of lying during such an address.

Van Orden defended his actions, stating, “The president should have started and ended his State of the Union address by apologizing to the American people. He’s let 8 million illegal immigrants into the country, opened the border. And you know he can close it. So what he said there in the State of the Union, a tremendous amount of it was just flat-out fabrication.”

Raju, inquiring further, asked if it was appropriate for a member of the House to yell “lies” during the president’s address. Van Orden countered by asking, “Is it appropriate to tell the truth?”

Later, Raju shared the interview on X (formerly Twitter) and provided additional context, explaining that it was initially challenging to identify who had shouted “lies” during the address. He noted that sources later informed him it was Van Orden, who initially hesitated to confirm it but eventually acknowledged the outburst.

Raju continued reporting on the State of the Union response from various members of Congress, observing that opinions largely fell along party lines, with Democrats praising the speech and Republicans sharply criticizing it. He highlighted some discontent among left-leaning members regarding the president’s remarks on Israel, particularly calls for an immediate cease-fire.
