Former President Donald Trump responded with enthusiasm to the news that Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah), who had voted twice to impeach Trump, would not seek re-election to the Senate. Trump’s reaction was posted in all capital letters on his Truth Social account:

“FANTASTIC NEWS FOR AMERICA, THE GREAT STATE OF UTAH, & FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. MITT ROMNEY, SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS PIERRE DELECTO, WILL NOT BE SEEKING A SECOND TERM IN THE U.S. SENATE, WHERE HE DID NOT SERVE WITH DISTINCTION. A BIG PRIMARY FIGHT AGAINST HIM WAS IN THE OFFING, BUT NOW THAT WILL NOT BE NECESSARY. CONGRATS TO ALL. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Romney had announced his decision not to run for re-election in a video message and expressed his desire to retire from the Senate when his term concludes in January 2025. He also stated that it was time for the younger generation to take a more active role in shaping the future.

During Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, Romney vigorously opposed his candidacy, referring to Trump as “one of the dumbest candidates in the history of the GOP.” However, after Trump’s election victory, Romney attempted to mend fences and was even considered a frontrunner for the position of secretary of state in Trump’s administration. While that appointment did not materialize, Trump endorsed Romney for the Senate in 2018.

Tensions between Romney and Trump resurfaced when Romney publicly criticized Trump’s actions, including attempts to subvert democracy, support for white supremacists, and behavior documented in the Mueller Report. The final break in their relationship came when Romney joined Democrats in calling for Trump’s first impeachment investigation. Romney ultimately voted to convict Trump on charges of abuse of power, and he voted to convict again after the events of January 6, stating that “The President’s conduct represented an unprecedented violation of his oath of office and of the public trust.”
