Despite receiving an eight-minute standing ovation after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, “The Apprentice,” a biopic depicting former President Trump’s rise in the real estate industry, left empty-handed in terms of awards. The film, directed by Iranian Danish filmmaker Ali Abbasi and starring Sebastian Stan as Trump and Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn, failed to secure any accolades, with the top prize going to “Anora,” a romantic drama set in New York.
Reports suggest that “The Apprentice” portrays Trump’s relationships with Cohn and his first wife, Ivana, in a negative light. In response, Trump’s attorney issued a cease-and-desist letter to the filmmakers, denouncing the film as “a concoction of lies” that defames Trump. This move follows warnings from Trump’s spokesperson of potential legal action against the creators, condemning the film as “malicious defamation.”
Despite these challenges, the film’s producers maintain that “The Apprentice” presents a “fair and balanced portrait” of the former president and urge viewers to make their own judgments. However, reports indicate that one of the film’s investors, Dan Synder, expressed dissatisfaction with the movie’s outcome and reportedly sought to prevent its release through legal means.
