The View from Down Under: 3MB, The Forgotten Trio Of The WWE

3mb

jobber- n. an un-pushed wrestler who does jobs for pushed wrestlers.

With The Shield and the Wyatt Family dominating all that comes before them including TV time, the other trio of the WWE, that of 3MB, are quietly going about their jobs without getting the credit they deserve (and yes they deserve credit). At this stage of their careers they are doing the role that is needed and required of them, and that is putting over, jobbing to the face superstars of the WWE roster. They have made both The Big Show and Mark Henry look unstoppable during handicap matches against them, as well as recently help establish the likes of The Usos, Los Matadores and Prime Time Players as strong tag teams. They are also some light hearted comedy relief in the sometimes (especially lately) pretty intense programming, as we saw with their Cobra flute off with Khali and Santino on Smackdown, and even this week on RAW coming out as the UK rock group The Union Jacks. They generally get a decent reaction from the live crowds with their “rock star” antics and attitudes.

However unlike previous career jobbers such as: Funaki, Yoshi Tatsu, The Brooklyn Brawler, Gillberg and Barry Horowitz, if members of 3MB are patient enough, their time will come when they will pass the baton of that role to someone else.

I can see eventual higher success for 3MB, whether it is in this group, or as individuals, as all three 3MB members are capable of having very solid mid-card careers, with possible one Drew McIntyre, capable of climbing higher.

Heath Slater when I first saw Heath Slater in the original NXT I didn’t think much of him, although I did like his catch phrase of being ‘the one man band’. He was portrayed as possibly the weakest member of the NEXUS story line as he was the one who seemed to pinned or beaten up the most, however did manager to hold the WWE Tag team titles with Justin Gabriel during that time. He and Gabriel would win the titles twice more as members of The CORR, the break-away group of NEXUS.

I started to enjoy Slater’s work in the ring when he was involved in putting over returning WWE legends leading up to the 1000 episode starting in June 2012. What we saw from Slater was some great comedy in the ring, some great selling in the ring, as well as he showed he was a company man prepared to do (dare I say it) ‘what’s good for business’. I looked forward to the segments each week, not only to see which legend would come down, but also Slater’s work in the ring with them.

Jinder Mahal arrived in the WWE in April 2011 and while initially teaming with The Great Khali, ending up feuding with him over his comical persona when he should be dominating the WWE. He would later have a small feud against Ted DiBiase, before spending time on WWE shows Superstars and NXT, before finally joining 3MB.

What Jinder Mahal has in his favour is the large India fan base the WWE has, and when The Great Khali retires (which should be soon as he struggles these days to get to the ring), then Jinder is in place ready to take over that demographic. With his superior wrestling skills to The Great Khali, he could eventually be India’s Alberto Del Rio.

Drew McIntyre had a short stint with the WWE in 2006, before his disappearing until his return in August 2009. He was handpicked by Vince McMahon to be ‘The Chosen One’ a future world champion that Vince had personally signed. During this run, Drew McIntyre would have some great moments which including being one of the remaining members of The Miz’s team at Survivor Series, matches and feud wins against superstars such as Finlay, R-Truth and John Morrison, with the later feud ending with McIntyre winning The Intercontinental title. A Wrestlemania Money In The Bank position, solid performance in an Elimination Chamber and Tag team Championship (with Cody Rhodes) would continue McIntyre’s good run.

A long losing streak would follow, as well as an injury, which resulted in Drew McIntyre’s lost momentum and resulting 3MB membership.

The talent he showed in those years 2009-2011 in WWE, gives me hope that he will not finish his time with the WWE as a career jobber, and can quite easily be that future World Champion.

I enjoy 3MB (I even have their theme song as my ringtone!), and there is a lot that the WWE can do with these three in regards to their ‘rock’ group, and with the right story can actually lift them from their current jobber status the legitimate threats within the WWE. If not all of them at once, then by changing members would allow the likes of Drew McIntyre the chance to climb to the top of at least the Smackdown roster.

Which member of 3MB do you think could go on and have possible become a main event player?

Hooroo and see you next week.
