Former WWE writer Kevin Eck recently posted a blog about how he pitched angle while with the company about how Roman Reigns would be revealed as the cousin of The Usos after The Shield attacked them and their father, who is Rikishi.
However, Vince McMahon and Triple H turned this idea down.
Here is an excerpt from the blog, which you can read here:
“Vince and Triple H were in agreement that we absolutely should not acknowledge that Reigns is Samoan,” Eck wrote. “Their belief was that it would pigeonhole him and damage his mystique. The inference was that the audience had a preconceived notion of what a Samoan wrestler is. You know, a guy in a grass skirt who wears a puka shell necklace.”
I suppose they did have a point. I mean, just imagine how much bigger of a star The Rock would have become if only WWE had hidden his Samoan heritage.
Speaking of The Rock, I found it wonderfully ironic that when the powers that be in WWE realized Reigns wasn’t connecting with the audience as a babyface as well as they had hoped, they brought in Reigns’ famous cousin to give him a rub.
WWE also acknowledged for the first time that Reigns was the son of Sika, one of the Wild Samoans, and a cousin of The Usos.
Oh well, better late than never.
