No reason for the sudden release was provided. But Zelina Vega herself made it abundantly clear by tweeting “I support unionization” ten minutes before the announcement.
It was soon reported that Zelina Vega had been very vocal against the new third party ban imposed on Superstars by WWE. Talents were asked to handover their fan interaction accounts on platforms like Twitch, Cameo, OnlyFans, etc. They were to receive only a fraction of the revenue they were making, leaving the rest for WWE.
WWE has now confirmed to Sports Illustrated that this new edict is indeed the root cause behind Vega’s release.
Zelina Vega was fired for breaching contract
WWE has revealed that Zelina Vega was fired because she breached the new clause of the contract. The ban was applicable for all Superstars across all rosters.
Per other sources, Zelina Vega put WWE in a difficult situation when she opened an OnlyFans account after the ban was announced. It was a direct dismissal of the edict put into place. Vega was using her new account for direct fan engagement.
It came into light that because of reduced program schedule, many Superstars were making more money off Twitch, Cameo, etc. than from WWE. Zelina Vega was one of them.
The edict quite naturally was not taken too well. Some like Vega and Paige were staunch in their stand. Ohers like AJ Styles and Cesaro met with Vince McMahon in person to express their displeasure, but to no avail.
Whether WWE has succeeded to make an example out of Zelina Vega’s firing, only time will tell. Meanwhile, she assures that this is not the last we see of her. Fans have already started to speculate whether she would be taking her talent and versatility in the ring and on the mic to a rival promotion like AEW or IMPACT once her 90-day non-compete clause is over.
