Mike Tyson and Pele are two of the biggest names in sports history. While, Tyson dominated the pro boxing world, Pele is considered as one of the greatest soccer players of all time. Pele passed away at the age of 82. His family confirmed the news on Thursday. The legendary soccer player had been battling colon cancer for some time and was admitted in a hospital for a respiratory problem on November 29.
Mike Tyson pays tribute to Pele
‘Iron Mike’ took to his Instagram account and posted a throwback picture with the soccer icon and wrote the following in the caption:
“I was 21 years old living the dream meeting one of the greats. He was a warm kind man without a bad thing to say about anyone. Rest in Peace.”
“Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace,” daughter Kely Nascimento wrote on Instagram.
A message from Pele’s official Twitter account on Thursday read:
“Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pelé, who peacefully passed away today. Love, love and love, forever.”
At the age of 82, he breathed his last following colon cancer, for which he was undergoing chemotherapy. However, Pele stopped responding to chemotherapy and was shifted to palliative care. Pele had a tumor removed from his colon in 2021 and was taking chemotherapy ever since. Born in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, the legendary footballer is the joint highest goal-scorer for the Selecao, with 77 goals in 95 games.
