A recent investigation conducted by The Wall Street Journal, in collaboration with researchers from Stanford University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, has uncovered disturbing findings regarding Instagram’s algorithm. The investigation reveals that the algorithm actively connects and promotes pedophiles who commission and sell illegal underage sexual content on the platform.
The report states that Instagram’s recommendation algorithms have facilitated a “vast” network of pedophiles involved in child sex abuse content and activities. Unlike platforms specifically catering to illicit content, Instagram not only hosts these activities but also promotes them through its algorithms. The platform’s recommendation systems excel at linking individuals who share niche interests, thereby connecting pedophiles and guiding them to content sellers.
Academics from Stanford’s Internet Observatory and the UMass Rescue Lab discovered large-scale communities promoting criminal sex abuse on Instagram. By using explicit hashtags like #pedowhore, #preteensex, and #pedobait, researchers were able to find illegal underage sexual content. They identified 405 sellers of self-generated child sex material, including accounts supposedly run by children as young as 12.
During their investigation, the researchers created test users and viewed a single account related to child sexual abuse. Immediately, they were bombarded with “suggested for you” recommendations that led them to potential sellers and buyers of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) on Instagram. These recommendations also included accounts linking to off-platform content sites. Sellers offered menus of explicit content for users to buy or commission, ranging from self-harm videos to bestiality imagery.
Merely following a few recommendations on the Instagram app caused the test accounts to be flooded with content sexualizing children and led to more recommendations of accounts with illegal content.
In response to the report, Meta (formerly known as Facebook) has set up an internal task force to investigate the issues raised. The company acknowledges that child exploitation is a horrific crime and claims to be continuously working on ways to actively combat this behavior. Meta states that it has taken down 27 pedophile networks in the past two years and plans further removals.
