Margot Robbie and Will Smith co-starred in two movies, “Focus” in 2015 and “Suicide Squad” in 2016. While their on-screen chemistry sparked rumors of an affair, there was a time when their off-screen relationship wasn’t so harmonious. Robbie revealed in an interview that she once called out Smith for making her wait during the audition process for “Focus.”
Robbie recalled a hectic journey to New York for the audition. She had been backpacking with her brother on an island in Croatia when she received the call. Racing against time, she managed to make it to the audition after a series of flights and delays. However, Smith was running late, and when he finally arrived, Robbie couldn’t help but express her frustration.
“I end up having the craziest 24 hours of my life. I’m soaking wet because I’d been swimming, I get back to the hostel at 6 a.m., no sleep, turn my phone on, and I’ve got all these messages: ‘They want you to audition for Focus. Your flight leaves tonight.’ There’s only one catamaran to the mainland and it leaves in 20 minutes, so I’m grabbing my stuff and I race off and I get the catamaran.”
In her exhausted state, with wet clothes and no sleep for the past 50 hours, Robbie confronted Smith, saying, “Yeah? Well, I just came from an island off Croatia, and I’m here on time.” While some might have chosen to remain silent in that situation, Robbie didn’t hold back and called Smith out for keeping her waiting.
Despite her bold move, Robbie ultimately landed the role in “Focus.” Reflecting on the experience, she humorously remarked, “So I got the job because I looked like shit and called Will Smith a dick?” It seemed that her audacious approach worked in her favor.
I walk into the audition and it turns out Will was running late. He comes in and says, ‘Sorry I’m late, I was coming from Queens.’ And I look at Will and I was like, ‘Yeah? Well, I just came from an island off Croatia and I’m here on time.
Their on-screen collaboration in “Focus” led to rumors and speculation about an affair between Robbie and Smith, even though both actors had their respective partners at the time. However, the truth behind their relationship remains unclear, and it is important to distinguish between on-screen chemistry and real-life dynamics between co-stars.
When they hired me for Focus, they said they liked my audition. I was like, ‘So I got the job because I looked like shit and called Will Smith a dick?’ It worked out well. Acting 101, I guess.
