According to Mediaite, former President Donald Trump commended Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) for releasing the full collection of tapes from the January 6 Capitol riot in a video promoted by his presidential campaign. Trump praised Johnson for his “courage and fortitude” in making the decision to release the tapes, stating that it would allow Americans, criminal defendants, public interest organizations, and the media to see for themselves what happened on January 6.
Johnson announced last year his intention to release the tapes in batches over the coming months, a move that differed from his predecessor, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who had resisted releasing the footage to the public. McCarthy did, however, provide access to the footage to former Fox News host Tucker Carlson in February. Carlson shared selective clips on his show in March, asserting that the video record did not support the claim that January 6 was an insurrection.
The attempt to portray the events of January 6 as a peaceful protest has faced contradicting evidence from eyewitness accounts, extensive footage, and federal prosecutors’ arguments. Johnson, who has endorsed Trump’s bid to return to the presidency, has previously embraced conspiracy theories regarding the election, including claims about rigged voting machines and software.
The release of the tapes is expected to shed light on the events surrounding the Capitol riot and provide a more comprehensive understanding of the day’s events.
