President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign seized on a series of misspeaks, rants, and alleged “religious extremism” by former President Donald Trump during a speech to a Christian group. Trump’s speech at the National Religious Broadcasters International Christian Media Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, became a target for the Biden campaign, which followed along in real-time on Twitter and criticized Trump on various fronts.
The Biden-Harris HQ account highlighted moments where Trump appeared confused or made what they characterized as gaffes. They posted clips portraying Trump as a “slurring” and rambling speaker, with specific attention to a part of the speech where he mentioned “Knocker fields” in relation to migrants and “Steak Mountain.”
The campaign also focused on a section where Trump criticized pronouns, calling them “sick” and expressing concerns about radical values being forced upon children. They singled out another moment where Trump claimed to have made Israel the capital of Israel, despite it being Jerusalem.
Additionally, the Biden campaign criticized what they labeled as “religious extremism” in Trump’s speech, particularly focusing on his remarks about abortion, marriage equality, birth control, and prayer mandates. They highlighted Trump’s pledge to force schools to adopt school prayer, his boasting about appointing Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade, and his claims of doing “more” than any other president to ban abortion. They also pointed out Trump’s praise for Justice Clarence Thomas, who suggested reevaluating the right to birth control and marriage equality in light of Roe being overturned.
The tweets reflect the Biden campaign’s strategy of capitalizing on perceived vulnerabilities in Trump’s speeches, particularly on issues related to confusion, controversial statements, and what they characterize as extreme positions on social and religious issues.
