Former Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele voiced concerns about the future of the GOP on Tuesday morning, suggesting that neither Donald Trump’s MAGA base nor Nikki Haley supporters would be sufficient to sustain the party on their own.
During an appearance on Morning Joe, Steele responded to the observation that Haley secured nearly 40% of the vote in the South Carolina GOP primary. Critics argue that this outcome indicates potential challenges for Trump in the general election, as a significant portion of the party and independent voters may withhold their support.
Steele argued against the idea that backing Trump is a winning strategy for Republicans, despite the former president’s success in primaries. He expressed skepticism about the long-term viability of the Republican Party with Trump at the helm, stating, “It’s how you grind yourself down as a national party into the dust of nothing.”
Highlighting the complexity of the situation, Steele pointed out that Haley, despite her strong showing in the primary, lost in her home state of South Carolina, where she served two terms as governor. He raised questions about the extent of her base and its ability to secure victories in both primaries and general elections.
Steele challenged the notion that the 40% support for Haley is a reliable number, emphasizing that when Democrats and Independents participate in a Republican primary, it raises questions about the true base of support. He noted that over 20% of Haley’s votes came from non-Republicans.
Addressing the current leadership of the Republican National Committee (RNC), Steele observed that many members came up under Trump, and the potential addition of Lara Trump, Trump’s daughter-in-law, to the leadership further solidifies his influence over the party. Steele expressed concern about this scenario, stating, “The reality is Donald Trump, everything he touches does die. Everything he has tried to put in place does not work. The RNC is now going to be controlled by his daughter-in-law, basically.”
Steele’s comments reflect a broader debate within the Republican Party about its future direction and leadership, with differing views on the role of figures like Trump and potential alternatives such as Nikki Haley.
