Supreme Court To Save Trump After Verdict?

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) recently called for the Supreme Court to step in over former President Donald Trump’s felony convictions. However, the Republican leader also touted increased fundraising numbers and predicted the convictions only benefit the party in November via Mediaite.

It has been noted that Johnson appeared on Fox & Friends on Friday in order to react to Thursday’s news that Trump is now a convicted felon after a Manhattan jury found him guilty in his hush money trial. He faces 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records. He’s now awaiting sentencing on July 11.

Co-host Lawrence Jones questioned Johnson at one point if the Supreme Court has a “duty” to step in on the matter as the convictions could impact the election and whether Trump were to have a successful appeal, that likely wouldn’t happen until after November.

“I do believe the Supreme Court should step in, obviously. This is totally unprecedented, and it’s dangerous to our system,” Johnson said.

The House Speaker has added that the Trump trial is “diminishing the American people’s faith” in the American system of justice. Johnson stated that he believes judges on the Supreme Court are also concerned.

“I think they’re as deeply concerned as we are, so I think they’ll set this straight, but it’s going to take awhile. You’re right, the process takes awhile to play out,” he said. “The Democrats know this, and they’re dragging it out. That was the whole objective. They want to try to bankrupt Donald Trump. They want to diminish his credibility and go after his character.”

The Supreme Court has yet to rule on Trump’s arguments for presidential immunity for actions taken while he was in office. Johnson argued there is no doubt that the hush money convictions will be overturned down the line.

“This will be overturned. There’s no question about it. It’s just going to take some time to do it,” he said.

While Johnson raised alarms about the implications of Trump now being a convicted felon, he also touted fundraising numbers in the hours after the verdict, including $300,000 to the National Republican Congressional Committee.

“We broke records on our fundraising platforms and we will continue to do that,” he declared, predicting “increased turnout on our side” over the former president’s convictions.
