As concerns grow about Joe Biden’s mental health, a professor from George Washington University has a new idea: replace Kamala Harris with Barack Obama as Biden’s running mate for 2024. The professor, John Banzhaf, believes this can be done legally, even if Obama ends up becoming president if something happens to Biden.
Banzhaf tweeted, suggesting that Biden should run with Obama as his vice president. He claims that many legal experts agree it’s constitutional.
Paul Bedard from the Washington Examiner reported Banzhaf’s idea, quoting him saying that a Biden-Obama ticket would have a better chance of defeating Trump. Banzhaf thinks that Obama is trusted by many Americans, making him a strong candidate.
Banzhaf explained that the 22nd Amendment, which stops presidents from serving more than two terms, only prevents Obama from being elected president again. It doesn’t stop him from being elected vice president and then becoming president if Biden can’t continue.
The 22nd Amendment says, “No person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice…” Banzhaf argues that this means Obama can be vice president and take over as president if needed, without being elected to the presidency again.
Banzhaf’s idea is controversial but offers a unique strategy for the Democratic Party as they prepare for the next election.
