AJ Styles on his latest WWE contract: “This contract that I’ve signed is my last”

AJ Styles

AJ Styles re-signed with WWE, adding another five years to his time with the company back in March. In a recent interview with Newsweek, the Phenomenal One revealed that it would be his last pro wrestling contract.

I can tell you that this contract that I’ve signed is my last. This is the perfect place for me to be. It’s family-oriented, I have no problem taking my family to the shows. It’s a PG product, which I enjoy. I’m in the best place I can be for my career.

Styles also commented on the world of professional wrestling outside of WWE. Though many are looking for a return to the days of the Monday Night Wars with AEW, he believes that no one should be attempting to compete with the global juggernaut.

As far as the indies and whatnot, I don’t think they should ever be competitive with the WWE. They should compete with themselves to make sure they get better every day because there’s no competition. WWE is globally huge. It’s unbelievable to know how big the WWE is. People don’t understand it.

Don’t compete. Be something different. Be the alternative.

Yes I’m sure the long-established company loaded with family friendly sponsors and merchandise sales coming out of their ears will immediately fold when the rival company targeted at dudebros who illegally stream EVERYTHING starts up…

Nope, WCW were backed by Ted Turner where are they now?……

Being PG is why WWE has failed. They are done once AEW starts. Period.

I can see AJ being one of those rare guys who knows when his time is done in wrestling and won’t go on forever, like the likes of Hogan, Taker and Flair. He will be what, 46 in five years time, which is not that old really, but in wrestling terms its fairly old.

He is a family man, had made some decent coin and is still at the top of his game. In five years age and injury could be catching up with him but he may decide to walk away before they do so he can go out on top.

That said, what you say now and what you do in five years time are two different things.

I fully agree with him about being different and “alternative”, though that shouldn’t, IMO, mean being ECW and “PG-13” or “Rated R”. That is a weak and lame way to differentiate, I think.

But I disagree with him that NO-one should try to compete with WWE. Hell yes they should. TNA somewhat successfully did for a bit, but they were ran by idiots. I don’t think AEW is going to be the “Second Coming” like some people seem to, but yes, WWE absolutely needs “legit” competition. Them being the “only game in town” at the top, has been nothing but bad for pro wrestling.
