According to AP News, on Wednesday, Andrew Tate, infamous for his misogynistic views, appeared in a court in Bucharest, Romania, where he faces charges of rape, human trafficking, and forming a criminal gang to exploit women. The former professional kickboxer, accompanied by his brother Tristan and six bodyguards, denied any wrongdoing, stating that he was being unfairly attacked.

Prosecutors have also filed charges against two Romanian women implicated in the case. Romania’s anti-organized crime agency alleges that the four defendants established a criminal group in 2021 with the intent of engaging in human trafficking in Romania, the United States, and Britain. The agency claims that seven female victims were deceived and transported to Romania, where they were subjected to sexual exploitation and physical violence. One of the defendants is accused of raping a woman twice in March 2022.

Both Andrew and Tristan Tate hold dual British-U.S. citizenship. Andrew’s spokesperson, Mateea Petrescu, stated that they are ready to demonstrate their innocence and defend their reputation, cooperating fully with the authorities and presenting evidence to refute the allegations.

All four suspects were detained in Bucharest in late December and were granted a transfer from police custody to house arrest following an appeal on March 31. The prosecution has ordered the seizure of their assets, including 15 luxury cars, luxury watches, and approximately $3 million in cryptocurrency.

According to Romania’s anti-organized crime agency, the alleged victims were recruited under false declarations of love and brought to Ilfov county, Romania, where they were coerced into participating in pornography. The women were reportedly controlled through intimidation, constant surveillance, and false claims of debt.

Andrew Tate gained notoriety as a social media personality, amassing over 6 million Twitter followers, primarily young men and teenage boys. He has faced bans on platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook for hate speech and misogynistic comments, including victim-blaming in cases of sexual assault. However, his Twitter account was reinstated after the platform’s CEO, Elon Musk, took over.
