During his commencement speech at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on Saturday, President Biden reassured observers that the nation “will not abandon” Ukraine amidst the Israel-Hamas war. He also reiterated constraints on American support.

Why it matters: Biden used the address to further differentiate himself from 2024 Republican presidential candidate and former President Trump, who delivered the commencement speech at the academy in 2020.

Although he didn’t directly mention Trump, the president highlighted values that Democrats have portrayed as endangered by another Trump administration, such as freedom and equal rights. Biden’s speech predominantly lauded the efforts of the U.S. military.

What he said: “There are no American soldiers engaged in combat in Ukraine,” Biden affirmed. “I am committed to maintaining that status.”

The president underscored “historic investments” in the U.S. military and expressed his readiness to utilize force when deemed necessary. He also referenced his late son Beau’s military service and commended American troops for aiding Ukraine against Russian aggression and providing assistance in Gaza during the Israel-war.

According to the New York Times, this marked Biden’s third time serving as West Point’s commencement speaker.

The bottom line: The speech presented an opportunity for the president to counter criticism not only of U.S. involvement in Ukraine but also of the nation’s handling of the conflict in Gaza and related student protests on college campuses.
