John Cena’s highly anticipated return to WWE always generates a lot of excitement among fans. Reports indicate that he is set to face Austin Theory at WrestleMania 39, but it wasn’t always the case. Behind their Patreon paywall, Wrestling News revealed that initially, Cena was scheduled to face Logan Paul, which was teased on social media. However, by January, plans had shifted, and Logan Paul was booked to face Seth Rollins instead.

According to Wrestling News, WWE is investing in Austin Theory’s future as a top-tier wrestler and working with Cena at WrestleMania will help elevate his status and connect him with fans. Although a Cena vs Logan Paul match could have been a major draw, it wouldn’t have contributed much to the company’s future.

Sometime in the fall, WWE had Cena penciled in for a match against Logan Paul. In fact, Cena teased this on social media and Paul has stated that he would love to have a WrestleMania match with him. That was the match that was planned as of December but by January they pivoted to Logan Paul vs. Seth Rollins.

Cena is committed to supporting WWE Superstars who will carry the company in the long term. While he can no longer wrestle every week, he will continue to make appearances and contribute to the industry. Cena is currently in Australia filming a new movie with Zac Efron, but he is expected to return to WWE for a RAW at the end of March, and then face Austin Theory at WrestleMania 39.

According to Ringside News, it was confirmed that “Stone Cold” Steve Austin was originally slated to face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 39. However, Austin declined the match, forcing WWE to look for an alternative.

A trusted source within WWE’s creative team also disclosed that Omos was not the first backup option for the match. Several other potential opponents were suggested, but ultimately, Omos was chosen to be Lesnar’s opponent at the event.

It is unclear who WWE had in mind as a replacement for Austin, and there have been numerous names suggested by fans in recent weeks. It is likely that creative considered a number of options before deciding on Omos.
