Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has once again raised the issue of race, seemingly in response to criticism over previous comments on the matter. Following a ruling by Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee allowing her to continue prosecuting the Trump election case despite allegations of an affair with her former special prosecutor, Nathan Wade, Willis addressed race during a recent Fulton County event.
Willis expressed frustration, stating, “It’s hard out here always having to prove yourself two and three times.” She continued, “Recently they tell me they don’t like me to talk about race. Well, I’m gonna talk about it anyway.” Willis acknowledged the challenges faced by Black individuals and commended the African-American leaders in the city for their sacrifices.
This isn’t the first time Willis has brought up race. In January, during a church event, she suggested that allegations regarding her relationship with Wade were racially motivated. Both Willis and Wade are Black. She questioned whether those raising concerns were playing the race card, emphasizing her nearly 30-year career in prosecution.
Willis’s comments have drawn attention in the Trump election case, with lawyers for former President Donald Trump arguing that her remarks improperly inject racial animus into the proceedings. Judge McAfee, in a previous order, deemed Willis’s January comments legally improper but did not penalize her. However, he cautioned against the dangers of public comments by a prosecuting attorney, noting the potential racial implications in her speech.
