The Morning Joe panel found humor in a previewed excerpt from former Rep. Liz Cheney’s upcoming memoir, “Oath and Honor.” In the memoir, Cheney reveals Kevin McCarthy’s purported excuse for visiting Mar-a-Lago just weeks after the January 6th Capitol attack to politically rehabilitate Donald Trump. Despite holding Trump personally responsible for the attack, McCarthy reportedly told Cheney, “Trump’s not eating, so they asked me to come see him.”
Joe Scarborough, hosting the MSNBC show, brought up the excerpt, and the panel couldn’t contain their amusement. Scarborough mockingly praised McCarthy for doing a “hell of a job” if his mission was to get Trump eating again, as that hasn’t been an issue. The hosts expressed disbelief at McCarthy’s explanation, and Scarborough humorously suggested a more believable excuse, such as going to Mar-a-Lago because “Donald is cheating on his wind sprints.” He added, “But he’s not eating? I don’t believe it!”
You know, maybe if he said, ‘I got to go down to Mar-a-Aago because Donald is cheating on his wind sprints,’ we’d believe that” Scarborough added. “But he’s not eating? I don’t believe it!”
The laughter continued as Willie Geist imagined McCarthy rushing to Trump’s bedside as if he were on the verge of death. Scarborough, amid laughter, exclaimed, “You really wanna go down to Mar-a-Lago that bad? C’mon Kevin! Make a better excuse than that.” The panel found McCarthy’s justification for the visit ridiculous, considering the context of the Capitol attack and the seriousness of his responsibility as House speaker. The humorous take on McCarthy’s explanation resonated with the Morning Joe audience.
