Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently shared the origins of his iconic “The People’s Champion” nickname during an appearance on “The Joe Rogan Experience.” The actor and former pro wrestler revealed that he adopted the title as a heel character, drawing inspiration from legendary boxer Muhammad Ali.
The Rock explained that during his heel turn with the Nation of Domination in WWE, he began calling himself “The People’s Champion” to provoke and annoy fans. The pivotal moment came when Ali’s family attended a wrestling event in Louisville, Kentucky. After the match, The Rock approached Ali’s wife and sought permission to use the nickname.
Expressing his respect for Ali, The Rock recounted the conversation with Ali’s wife, saying:
“I just want you to know, if you could let Muhammad know, I call myself The People’s Champion in a way to pay homage, out of respect.” He further conveyed that if Ali objected to him using the title, he would stop. According to The Rock, Ali’s wife delivered the message that Ali told her to inform him, “It’s yours.”
Emotionally moved by Ali’s approval, The Rock emphasized the significance of the moment in his wrestling career. His “The People’s Champion” persona played a crucial role in establishing him as a major figure in WWE, contributing to both his success and notoriety among wrestling fans during his heel run with the Nation of Domination in 1997.
