In a recent video shared on the UFC’s Twitter account, former light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones opened up about a bitter memory from his first job as a paper boy. Jones recounted how he and his brothers were hired by a female neighbor to deliver newspapers through a snow-covered route during the winter. However, once the snow cleared, the neighbor fired Jones and his brothers and re-employed her own sons on the same route. Jones revealed that this experience was one of the first times he realized how unjust the world could be. He commented on the incident saying, “I thought that was the lowest thing ever. [It was] one of my first experiences of learning that this could be a very cold world.”
“My first job, I was a paper boy… Me and my brothers, all winter. The woman who hired us lived in this duplex building with us. She was our downstairs neighbor and her kids did paper routes as well. For the winter time, this lady hired me and my brothers. The paper route we’d walk through [had] snow that came up to our knees.”
“We did a great job. Everyone got their papers, we were always on time… And as soon as the snow melted, she fired us and re-hired her kids, and put them back on the route. I thought that was the lowest thing ever. [It was] one of my first experiences of learning that this could be a very cold world.”
