MSNBC cut away from Donald Trump’s tirade outside the hearing on the criminal hush money payments on Monday, as the former president once again raised claims of “election interference” and “voter intimidation.”

Anchor Andrea Mitchell prefaced the cutaway by noting,

“The former president is repeating his familiar refrain, suggesting this is a case of election interference, which is disputable.” She then handed over to NPR’s Mara Liason for analysis.

Liason remarked,

“It’s all about spinning and stalling. There’s a tactical aspect to this, aiming to prolong the proceedings, ideally past the upcoming election. But the broader strategy is to undermine public trust in the justice system. Trump’s goal seems to be to discredit any outcomes of these trials, much like he attempted to do with the election results. That’s why he’s framing this as ‘election interference’ and ‘voter intimidation,’ portraying the justice system itself as the accused, not him.”

Attorney Joyce Vance chimed in,

“Trump’s claim of election interference does hold some truth, albeit not in the way he intends. This case, which he tries to downplay as inconsequential business matters, actually revolves around the desperate measures taken by his campaign in the final stretch of the 2016 election. With the ‘Access Hollywood’ tape released and a significant loss of female support, there was a frantic effort to conceal his affair with a porn star, Stormy Daniels, while his wife was at home with their infant son.”

Vance continued, “The hush money payments were made to ensure this damaging information remained hidden, falsely labeled as payments to Trump’s then-lawyer, Michael Cohen. When viewed in its entirety, the case is clearly about deceiving voters and denying them critical information about a candidate as they cast their ballots.”
