According to Mediaite, Attorney General Merrick Garland has responded to critics, including former President Donald Trump, who have made unfounded accusations regarding the Department of Justice’s handling of investigations into Trump, President Joe Biden, and Hunter Biden. Garland is set to testify at a hearing before the Republican-controlled House Judiciary Committee, titled “Oversight of the U.S. Department of Justice.”

In an excerpt of his opening remarks, Garland addressed those who have accused him of colluding with President Biden to target Trump, being lenient on Hunter Biden, and protecting the president. Garland emphasized the principle that there should not be different sets of laws or rules for individuals based on their power, wealth, political affiliation, or other factors. He affirmed the Justice Department’s commitment to following the facts and the law, irrespective of where they lead.

Garland clarified his role, stating that he is not the president’s lawyer and not Congress’s prosecutor. Instead, he reiterated that the Justice Department works for the American people, and their duty is to adhere to the facts and the law in their investigations.

While Garland is not directly involved in the investigations in question, he has appointed special counsels to handle them. Special Counsel Jack Smith is investigating Trump’s handling of classified documents and his conduct related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Special Counsel Robert Hur is investigating classified documents discovered and turned over by President Biden’s team. Additionally, in August, Garland appointed David Weiss, a Trump-appointed U.S. attorney, as a special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden.

These investigations have led to indictments against Trump on 44 felony counts and three charges against Hunter Biden, with no charges filed against President Biden at this time. Garland’s statement emphasizes the Justice Department’s commitment to impartially following the law and the facts in its investigations.

There is not one set of laws for the powerful and another for the powerless; one for the rich, another for the poor; one for Democrats, another for Republicans; or different rules, depending upon one’s race or ethnicity or religion.

As the President himself has said, and I reaffirm here today: I am not the President’s lawyer. I will also add that I am not Congress’s prosecutor. The Justice Department works for the American people. Our job is to follow the facts and the law, wherever they lead. And that is what we do.
